Hiking and cycling routes in Italy

Italy’s long walks fall into two groups. In the Dolomites the Alte Vie go hut to hut over high passes. Elsewhere the cammini follow old pilgrim and trade routes from town to town, such as the Via Francigena to Rome and the Via degli Dei over the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. The cycle routes are fewer, and most come down from the Alps. The Sentiero Italia, at about 8,000 km, goes through every region.
