How to make an animated travel map

Add your route

Type the places you went through, upload a file from Strava, Komoot or Garmin, or pick a trip you recorded on Pebbls. Then say how you got from one to the next.

Choose a style

There are four map styles. Add a title if you want one. The preview plays while you work on it.

Make the video

It takes a few minutes, and we email you a link to download it.

What goes on the map

It works best for trips with a long route: a bike tour, a long-distance walk, a campervan trip or a sailing passage.

Transport for each stretch

Mark which parts you cycled, walked, drove or took the ferry, and the icon on the line changes to match.

Photos where you took them

With Premium, each stop can show up to three photos. They appear as the line reaches the stop.

Height profile

If your route file has heights in it, a profile fills in along the bottom as the line moves.

Contour lines

On the Outdoors style, short routes zoom in far enough to show footpaths and contour lines.

Borders

When the route crosses into another country, its flag and name come up.

On a phone

It runs in the browser, so you can make one on your phone without installing anything.

Chapters

A long trip can be split into one short video per chapter.

Bring a route from another app

Most apps let you download a trip as a GPX file, and that’s all you need. KML, KMZ, TCX and GeoJSON work too. Pebbls journeys come with their photos.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. Free animations are Full HD and up to 30 seconds long, with up to 10 named stops along a route of any length. They carry a small Pebbls mark in the corner. You don't need an account to make one.

Do I need to download an app?

No. It runs in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. On a phone you can draw the route with your finger.

Can I use my Strava, Garmin or Komoot route?

Yes. Download the activity or route as a GPX file (most apps have Export or Download GPX on the activity page) and upload it. KML, KMZ, TCX and GeoJSON work too.

Can I add photos?

Yes, with Premium (one credit for the animation). A Pebbls journey brings its photos with it, and you can add a photo to any place you type. A stop can show up to three photos as prints on the map.

How long can the animation be?

Free animations run up to 30 seconds. Premium ones run up to 3 minutes, or can be split into one video per chapter.

Which sizes can I make?

Wide 16:9 for YouTube, tall 9:16 for Reels, TikTok and Shorts, and square 1:1 for posts.

Can I post the video anywhere?

Yes, it's yours to post and share. The map credit to OpenStreetMap stays in the corner, as the map data asks.

What does Premium cost?

One credit per animation, and making it again after changes is free. Credits come in packs of 6 for £14, $18 or €16 and never run out, and Pebbls Explorer members get 12 a year.

Can I turn a Polarsteps trip into a video?

Yes. Request your data download from Polarsteps, then upload the trip file here. Your steps become the stops on the map.

Can I make a 3D flyover instead?

Yes, that's our other tool, Route to video: a 3D flyby film that follows your route over the terrain.
