Kayak and canoe safety plan
For a day on the water or a few days along the coast. The boats and their colours, where you launch and land, when you'll check in, and who to call if you don't.
Nothing is uploaded. The plan is written into the link itself, and the draft stays in this browser.
Pebbls isn't an emergency service and can't send help. In an emergency, call the local emergency number.
What the coastguard will ask
How many boats, and what colour. What you're wearing. Where you launched, where you meant to land, and where you could have got off the water early. The Coastguard asks paddlers to wear bright clothing so they can be spotted, so write the colours down.
A way to call for help
The RNLI's advice is to take a means of calling for help and keep it on you, within reach, at all times: a phone in a waterproof pouch, a handheld VHF, a personal locator beacon. A beacon must be registered. The plan lists what you've got, so the coastguard knows how you might call.
Sea or river
At the coast in the UK, the call is 999 for the Coastguard. On a lake or a river, it's 999 for Fire and Rescue. Choose sea or river at the start and the plan gives your contact the right one.
Questions people ask
Can I plan a few days with camps?
Yes. Choose a few days, set a check-in each evening and write where you'll be camping. Your contact gets the list, and a reminder at each worry time if they add it to their calendar.
What if there's no signal where we camp?
Set the worry time later than you'd think, and say in the notes what you'll do. A missed check-in isn't an emergency on its own. If you carry a satellite messenger, put it on the plan.
Does it work for paddleboards?
Yes, pick Paddleboard. It asks for the board's colour and whether you're on the sea or a lake.
