Turn your trip into a video

Pebbls has two ways to make a video of a route you’ve cycled, walked, sailed or driven. One draws the route on a flat map. The other flies over it in 3D. Both are free to start, run in the browser with nothing to install, and work from a route file out of Strava, Garmin or Komoot, or a route you draw on the map.

Below is the same trip made both ways: the Hebridean Way, 764 km by bike and ferry up the islands off the west coast of Scotland.

Animated map

The route draws itself across a map, with your stops named as it reaches them.

3D flyby film

The camera follows your route over satellite imagery in 3D, hills and all, and slows down at the places you mark.

Getting your route in

Both tools take a GPX file, the file most apps and watches use to save a route. On strava.com, Garmin Connect and Komoot it’s in the activity’s menu, under Export or Download GPX. Wahoo, RideWithGPS and AllTrails have the same option.

No file is fine too. You can draw the route on the map: it follows roads and paths, or goes straight across water. The animated map also takes KML, TCX and GeoJSON files, or you can just type the places you went through.

Premium and credits

The two tools share the same credits. One credit makes one premium video. Credits come in packs of 6 for £14, $18 or €16 and don’t run out, and Pebbls Explorer members get 12 a year. A credit is only used when you press the button to make the video, and you get it back if the video fails.

If you track your trips with Pebbls

If you record your journeys with the Pebbls app, you don’t need either tool for this. The app records your route as you go, and every chapter with a few pebbls and photos gets a flyby film made for it, free. You can also turn any of your Pebbls journeys into an animated map, and its photos come with it.

Questions

Can I turn a Strava ride into a video?

Yes. On strava.com (not the app), open the activity, press the ··· menu and choose Export GPX. Upload that file to either tool. Garmin Connect, Komoot, Wahoo, RideWithGPS and AllTrails let you download a GPX in much the same way.

Is it free?

Yes, both are. A free animated map is Full HD, up to 30 seconds long with 10 named stops, and has a small Pebbls mark in the corner. A free flyby film covers up to 200 km with up to 10 moments and ends with a short Pebbls card. Neither asks for card details.

Do I need an account or an app?

No. Both work in the browser on a phone, tablet or computer. For a flyby film you give an email address so we can send you the link when it’s ready.

Can I make both from the same route?

Yes, upload the same file to each. The animated map suits the whole trip, and a flyby film suits one day of it, so the two work well together.

Can I post the video anywhere?

Yes, it’s yours to download and post where you like. The map credits stay small in the corner, as the map data asks.
