Find the nearest chandlery
For the shackle that went over the side or the impeller that gave up. It finds chandleries, boatyards and sailmakers near you or near the next harbour, with opening hours where they’re known.
Chandleries, boatyards and sailmakers
It looks for shops mapped as chandleries or boat shops, boatyards and boatbuilders, and sailmakers, and says which is which.
Chandleries are thinner on the ground than bike shops, so it starts by looking 10 km around you and goes out to 60 km if it needs to.
Ring before you walk round the harbour
When the opening hours are on the map you’ll see whether it’s open now and when it closes. Plenty of small chandleries keep their own hours, so the Call button is there for those.
Along a passage, a canal or a river
Load a GPX of the passage, or of a canal or river trip, and it lists the chandleries within reach of the line in the order you’ll pass them. It’s a quick way to see where to stock up before a long stretch with nothing.
Distances are along your line and then straight to the shop, so check the walk from the pontoon.
Where the information comes from
OpenStreetMap, drawn by volunteers. Harbour towns are usually well mapped. Small yards up creeks often aren’t, and if yours is missing you can add a note on OpenStreetMap from the link under the list.
Questions people ask
What counts as a chandlery here?
Shops mapped as chandleries or ship chandlers, boat shops, chandlers in the map’s nautical data, boatyards, boatbuilders and sailmakers. Each result says which it is.
Can it find other things too?
Yes. Tap More above the results to add drinking water, food shops, toilets, showers, cash machines, campsites and the rest. It’s one tool, called Places you’ll need.
Why does it look so far away?
There are far fewer chandleries than bike shops. It looks 10 km around you first, then 30 km, then 60 km, until it has five to choose from.
Can I search from a harbour I haven’t reached yet?
Yes. Type the harbour, marina or town in the search box instead of using your location.
Does it know about fuel berths and pump-outs?
Not yet. It only looks for chandleries, boat shops, boatyards and sailmakers.
How up to date is it?
Pebbls keeps its own copy of OpenStreetMap, which volunteers edit every day, and refreshes it every week. Your device keeps each answer for three days so the same search doesn’t ask again. Hours change and shops close, so ring first.
Is my position sent anywhere?
If you use your location, a rounded version of it, to about 100 metres, goes to Pebbls’ server to find what’s near. It’s only used for that search.
These places come from OpenStreetMap, a map that volunteers keep up to date. Our copy of it is refreshed every week. Some will be out of date, so ring before you go out of your way.
