Time zone map

Every time zone in the world with its offset from UTC, for right now. Pick a date or move the slider and the labels follow the clock changes. Tap or click a place for its local time.

Why the offsets change

Many places put their clocks forward an hour for part of the year. London is on UTC until the last Sunday in March, then UTC+1 until the end of October. The map works out each zone’s offset for the moment shown, so pick a date in July and London shows UTC+1.

Not every zone is a whole hour. India is UTC+5:30 and Nepal UTC+5:45. Those zones get a third shade on the map, so they stand out from their neighbours.

Lines that don’t follow the meridians

Time zones follow borders more than lines of longitude. China keeps one time from end to end, so the far west has the same clock as Beijing. Spain is on the same time as Berlin, even though most of it lies west of London.

Out at sea the zones are plain bands 15 degrees wide, an hour each.

Questions people ask

Where does the time zone data come from?

The boundaries are OpenStreetMap data, put together by the timezone-boundary-builder project and made lighter for this map. They’re under the Open Database License (ODbL). The offsets come from your browser’s own time zone tables, for the date shown.

Does it allow for the clocks going forward?

Yes. Each zone’s offset is worked out for the date and time on the slider, so a date in July shows London as UTC+1 and a date in January shows it as UTC.

Why are some parts of the map dark?

That’s the night. The day and night map is underneath, so you can see where it’s light at the same moment. Switch off Time zones to see it on its own.

Can I see the local time somewhere?

Tap or click it. A card shows the local time there, its offset from UTC and that day’s sunrise and sunset.

Does it cost anything?

No. There’s no account to make and nothing to install.
