Turn your Wikiloc trail into a 3D video
Make a 3D video of a walk or a ride you recorded on Wikiloc, with your photos in it, then save it and share it. It’s free and there’s nothing to install. Getting the file out of Wikiloc takes a minute, and we’ll show you where to look.
Get your route file from Wikiloc
It’s called a GPX file. The Wikiloc website gives you the most choice, so use a computer if you can.
wikiloc.com › Your trail › Download › File › .gpx
- Sign in at wikiloc.com and open the trail. Your own trails are on your profile.
- Click Download at the top right of the trail page and open the File tab.
- Choose .gpx and Original trail, tick the waypoints if you want them, and download the file.
- Take Original trail, not the simplified one. The simplified version keeps 500 points, which cuts corners on a twisty path.
- Waypoints you saved on the trail can become your moments, with their names already filled in.
- In the Wikiloc app, open the trail and use the option to send it to a GPS as a file. Save the file to your phone and upload it from there.
Why make a film of a trail?
Wikiloc is where a lot of walkers and riders in Spain and Italy find their next route. A trail page shows a line on a map. A film shows the climb and the long way down in about a minute, with your photos where you took them, and it plays in a WhatsApp group without anyone opening an app.
Tips for a better film from Wikiloc
Your waypoints are your moments
The spring or the mountain hut you marked on Wikiloc comes through with the file. You add the photos.
Use your own recording
If you followed someone else’s trail and recorded as you went, film your recording. It has your line, wrong turns and all.
Long routes, one stage at a time
A Camino stage or a day on a GR is usually one trail. Make a film of each, or a Premium film of up to 2,000 km for the lot.
Check how you travelled
We guess walking, cycling or driving from the times in the file. Change it for any stretch, and add the ferry if there was one.
Three steps, a few minutes
Add your route
Upload a GPX from your watch, bike computer or app, or trace it on the map. It follows roads and paths, or goes straight across water.
Add moments
A name, a line or two and up to three photos at each place that mattered. The film slows down and shows them.
Get your film
We make it and email you the link. Download it, post it, send it to everyone who came along.
Questions
How do I download a GPX file from Wikiloc?
On wikiloc.com, open the trail and click Download at the top right. In the File tab, choose .gpx and Original trail, then download it.
Can I do it all on my phone?
Yes. In the Wikiloc app, send the trail as a file using the option for sending it to a GPS, then open Route to video in your phone’s browser and upload it.
Will my Wikiloc waypoints show in the film?
Yes, if you ticked them when you downloaded the file. Named waypoints are offered as moments, and you add the photos.
Can I make a video of someone else’s trail?
You can make a film of any GPX file. If you walked or rode it yourself, your own recording and photos make the better film.
